On August 22, 2025, the M3DAS project team conducted on-site interviews with two prominent progressive farmers in the Cagayan mill district. These interviews are a vital component of the project’s qualitative research, providing ground-level insights into how mechanization directly impacts farm productivity and management.
Spotlight on Cagayanโs Progressive Farmers
The team visited two distinct municipalities to document varied farming scales and management styles:
Mr. Pablo Abella (Tuao, Cagayan): Operates a family-managed sugarcane farm alongside his father and brother. His perspective highlights the importance of multi-generational knowledge combined with modern agricultural practices.
Ms. Cheryl Martin (Sto. Niรฑo, Cagayan): Manages her farm with a focus on systematic operations and efficient resource utilization.
Key Insights: Mechanization and Yield
During the interviews, both farmers shared their specialized farming practices and management strategies. A central theme was the strategic utilization of mechanization resources, which they identified as a primary driver for:
Increased Sugarcane Yield: Transitioning from manual labor to machine-assisted land preparation and cultivation.
Operational Efficiency: Reducing the time required for critical farming phases.
Resource Management: Optimizing the use of fertilizers and irrigation through better equipment.
The Role of Qualitative Data in M3DAS
These “success stories” serve as practical benchmarks for the M3DAS project. By documenting the experiences of progressive farmers, the project can:
Validate the Benefits: Provide evidence-based reasons for other farmers to adopt mechanization.
Inform Policy: Assist the DA-SRA in identifying which types of machinery are most effective for specific terrains in the Cagayan region.
Refine the Mechanization Plan: Incorporate actual farmer feedback into the national strategy for sugarcane industry modernization.
Institutional Framework:
The M3DAS project is implemented by UPLB-BIOMECH, funded by DOST-PCAARRD, and executed in close collaboration with the Department of Agriculture โ Sugar Regulatory Administration (DA-SRA).
